This report examines the growing reliance of international fashion brands on synthetic fibres, a major driver of microplastic pollution, and their lack of support for meaningful legislation. Despite increasing evidence of the environmental and health risks, the industry uses distraction and delay tactics to protect its fast fashion business model. The report evaluates 50 major fashion brands on their use of synthetic fibres and their strategies to address microplastic pollution. Synthetic fibres, particularly polyester, now account for over two-thirds of textile production and contribute significantly to plastic pollution, leading to serious environmental and health issues. Despite these negative impacts, most brands continue to use synthetic materials and resist substantial change.

The study is based on a survey of 184 women workers across 13 factories in Bengaluru and Mysuru, providing insights into the experiences of both local and inter-state migrant women. It reveals how women's migration and work patterns affect their lives and underscores broader implications for female labor force participation in the global low-wage supply chain.

Cividep’s report and documentary shed light on the lives of 184 women garment workers in Karnataka, revealing exploitation through low wages, harassment, and unpaid domestic labor extending their workday to 16 hours. The documentary captures their personal stories of hardship, poverty cycles, and how social reproduction subsidizes capitalist profits. Both, the movie and the study call for integrated action between labor and women’s movements to challenge systemic inequities.

Baumwolle ist die wichtigste Naturfaser für die Bekleidungsproduktion. Viele Millionen Menschen weltweit bauen Baumwolle an – dabei werden vielfach Pestizide eingesetzt und die Mehrheit der Bäuer*innen erzielt nur ein geringes Einkommen aus dem Baumwollanbau. Dabei gibt es seit etlichen Jahren den sog. „nachhaltigen“ Baumwollanbau, zu dem u.a. Cotton made in Africa, die Better Cotton Initiative oder Fairtrade zählen. Die SÜDWIND-Zeitungsbeilage zeigt, dass die Nachhaltigkeitsstandards mehr tun müssten, um den Baumwollanbau sowohl sozial als auch ökologisch nachhaltiger zu gestalten.
